Nutrition Service
The Nutrition Service ensures that all beneficiaries attending Pebbles Project educational centres receive wholesome, nutritious meals. The service was established after recognising that many children at the centres were not receiving the balanced nutrition they need to learn and thrive.
In 2013, the Stichting Garcia Foundation committed to funding the Nutrition Service, which was then launched in 2014.
Initially, the organisation sourced ready-made meals from an external provider, but the goal was to establish a Pebbles-owned commercial kitchen, preparing high-quality, cost-effective, nutritious meals in-house.
After extensive research and secured funding from the Stichting Garcia Foundation and Goede Mensen, this dream became a reality and the Pebbles Kitchen opened its doors in 2019.
The Pebbles Kitchen
- Launched in March 2019, located at Klein Joostenberg in Stellenbosch.
- Has the capacity to prepare up to 5,000 meals per day.
- Meals are cooked daily, frozen, and distributed to the Pebbles Project educational centres for practitioners to heat and serve to the children.
- Serves beneficiaries in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Somerset West, Wellington, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Grabouw, Citrusdal, and Clanwilliam.
- Acts as an income-generating project for the organisation and provides meals to other non-profits and educational centres, with plans to expand its reach across the greater Winelands area.
- Cooks approximately 2,500 meals with 1,000 meals delivered to Pebbles Project beneficiaries and the remainder to other non-profits and ECD centres.
- Supports the Maternal Health Initiative by supplying supplementary meals to pregnant women in need of proper nutrition for a healthy pregnancy.
- The Pebbles Kitchen operates the Pebbles Food Truck Initiative, providing affordable, nutritious meals to ECD centres in lower-income areas.
