Lucy’s Story
Lucy’s Story
When 16-year-old Lucy joined the Pebbles Project After-School Club, it became clear that she was facing a significant challenge: a reading delay that was holding her back, not just academically, but emotionally, too. One of the Pebbles Project School Enrichment Programme (SEP) Practitioners noticed Lucy was struggling to make out the words during a one-on-one reading session and knew something more was going on.
The Practitioner recalls, “Lucy was restless, and as a result, we struggled with discipline. She had been suspended from the After-School Club on multiple occasions, and I was genuinely worried about her.”
Recognising that Lucy needed more than just academic support, the Practitioner focused on building a warm, nurturing environment; a safe space where Lucy could feel seen, heard, and supported. She offered constant encouragement, especially on the days when Lucy felt disheartened or unmotivated.
At first, Lucy’s progress was slow, but steady. With continued support, she began reading a few sentences. Over time, she gained the confidence to read several pages with ease. Before long, something remarkable happened: Lucy fell in love with reading.
This shift changed everything. Her schoolwork began to improve, and so did her confidence. “I was shocked to see that Lucy was taking the lead in group activities,” the Practitioner shares. “Her confidence is really starting to shine.” Today, Lucy is an avid reader, and her favourite genre is adventure fiction.
Her relationships with her peers have also blossomed. No longer withdrawn, Lucy now enjoys participating in group activities, engaging enthusiastically with others, and embracing her role as a leader. “It’s honestly a delight to have her at the After-School Club,” the practitioner says. “Her transformation has been truly astounding.”
The Pebbles Project School Enrichment Programme (SEP) support learners like Lucy to build strong foundations in language and reading, and unlocking a world of possibility through literacy.
With compassion, patience and dedicated guidance, Lucy overcame her reading delay, found her voice, and blossomed into a bright, confident young woman. Her journey is a shining example of the life-changing impact of literacy support, and a reminder of the power of believing in a child’s potential.
