Meaghan’s Story
Meaghan, aged 22, grew up on Bellevue Wine Estate. She is the middle child, with an older sister and a younger brother, both of whom no longer live at home. Meaghan’s journey with Pebbles Project began at just 6 years old when she formed part of the School Enrichment Programme (SEP) while attending the Pebbles Project After-School Club on the farm.
Meaghan’s path took an unexpected turn when she dropped out of high school at the age of seventeen. Left uncertain of her future, she spent time at home with her mother, unsure of what her next steps would be. It was during this period that a young adult on the farm told her about the Pebbles Project Youth Development Programme (YDP), which led Meghan to enrol.
The YDP has been a turning point for Meaghan, helping her develop key skills for her future. “The programme really helped to build my confidence and to gain work experience,” she shares, especially highlighting her time in the barista training, which she really enjoyed.
In March 2024, Pebbles Project, in collaboration with Dow Diversey – a Solenis company – launched the Soap For Hope™ Project in Stellenbosch. Originally founded by Diversey in 2013, the Soap For Hope™ Project has expanded to over 50 countries worldwide, transforming discarded hotel soap into a valuable resource for those in need. Through this project, Pebbles Project provides recycled soap to communities in need, ensuring access to proper hygiene resources that can save lives and improve overall well-being.
Meaghan was offered the opportunity to work at the Pebbles Recycled Soap (Soap For Hope™) Project by the YDP Coordinator. “I was so excited when I heard I’d be working there!” Meaghan recalls. Initially, the work was challenging, but as she grew in her role, her confidence flourished. “After I found my feet, I really started to enjoy it!”
Her new job has brought much-needed financial stability to her and her mother. “My family is so happy that I have a job,” she says. Meaghan lives with her mother, who has been the sole provider for their family since the passing of her father. “It’s wonderful to be able to help my mom with the groceries and toiletries with my salary.”
Meaghan enjoys working with her colleagues and thinks they make a great team. She finds joy in every step of the soap-making process.
When asked what Pebbles Project means to her, Meaghan responds: “Pebbles means so much to me. They supported me through a very tough time when things weren’t easy. I only have good things to say about Pebbles. They’ve always been there for me.”
As Meaghan continues her journey with the Pebbles Recycled Soap Project, we are excited to see the positive impact she will continue to make in her community.
