Marshaleno’s Story
Marshaleno’s Story
At just 22 years old, Marshaleno is building a future that once felt far beyond his reach. Marshaleno lives with his father on a farm in Karwyderskraal. Like many young people growing up in rural farming communities, opportunities to explore careers, gain practical experience and access meaningful employment can be limited.
Marshaleno enrolled in the Pebbles Project Youth Development Programme (YDP) and started attending the Youth Development Centre at the Pebbles Project Hemel-en-Aarde Education Project in June 2025, initially with the dream of becoming a fashion designer.
The YDP supports young adults, aged 15–25, from farming communities to access employment opportunities through skills development, mentorship, work experience, and entrepreneurship training. The programme is delivered at the Pebbles Youth Development Centres in Stellenbosch and the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
With his vibrant personality, keen eye for fashion and natural ability to express himself, creativity has always been an important part of who he is. During his time at the Youth Development Centre, he was introduced to new career possibilities and developed the skills and confidence needed to enter the workplace.
Marshaleno completed practical training in Advanced Waiter Training, Leadership, Wine 101, Reception and Front of House Skills, Administration, Housekeeping and Vegetable Production. He was then given the opportunity to complete three months of practical work experience at Creation Wines.
What began as a short-term placement soon became a turning point. Marshaleno’s warm personality, enthusiasm and ability to connect with guests quickly stood out, and following his practical experience, he was offered full-time employment as a Hospitality Host.
“His training and knowledge of the industry definitely influenced our decision to appoint him full-time,” explains Salome Geldenhuys, Human Resources and Sustainability Manager at Creation Wines. “His personal development really showed in his attitude and work ethic, and we felt he had the necessary skills to be employed.”
Salome describes Marshaleno as hardworking, neat and professional, noting the significant growth she has seen in his confidence, attitude and work ethic.
While Marshaleno’s original dream was to become a fashion designer, his journey shows that sometimes an unexpected opportunity can open a new door. His creativity and vibrant personality remain part of who he is, while his new career is giving him the confidence, experience and financial independence to shape his own future.
Marshaleno’s story demonstrates how investing in young people from rural communities can help turn potential into opportunity and create a pathway towards a brighter, more independent future.
